☆ポイント１ 句動詞の受動態
今回から文法の補講も開始します。文を読むには文法が不可欠です。そこで、英文解釈の補講という形で、文法を解説していきます。
今回のテーマは句動詞の受動態です。
句動詞(群動詞)とは、動詞と前置詞または副詞がセットになったもののことです。受動態において注意することは、句動詞を１つの動詞として扱うことです。
ex. The suggestion was laughed at by the committee.
上の文は、The committee laughed at the suggestion.を受動態にしたものです。laughed atを１つの動詞と見なしているので、これを受動態の形にすると、be laughed at byになるということです。前置詞が２つ続く不思議な形ですが、間違っていません。勝手に前置詞を抜かさないように注意しましょう。
☆例文の解説
The research was carried out by Freedom House.
今回の文を能動態に直すと、Freedom House carried out the researchになります。
carried outを１つの動詞を見なして、受動態にすると、be carried out byになるというわけです。
訳例
この調査はFreedom houseによって行われました。
byがもとの主語なので、「Freedom houseが行った」でもOK。
